In 1975 in downtown Sacramento, California a crew of young skateboarders met at a paved embankment under the freeway, They had no idea that their underground movement would have a global impact on the world of skateboarding.
What sets them apart? They’ve stuck together and they’ve never stopped.
The N-Men have influenced many of the best pro skateboarders in the world and they have continued to remain relevant to the sport and to the industry. They kept their pools secret and, unless you were a pro skater visiting Northern California, you would have never heard of them. They were inclusive, never exclusive. If you could find them, keep up with them and charge hard, you became one of them. It was never about fame or fortune, just the pure soul of hardcore skateboarding. It was and still is a movement.
Their story has never been told. Until now.
My name is James Sweigert, I am a filmmaker and a Sacramento native currently residing in Los Angeles, California. I first saw the N-Men in 1978 when I became a member of Sierra Wave skateboard park in Rancho Cordova. They were the best skateboarders in the park. They charged harder and went bigger than anyone. They were wild. I saw them at punk shows and skated with them a few times in the 80’s then I lost touch.
Twenty five years later through social media, I was able to do a search to see if any of them were alive. Not only did I find them, they were still at it and they have never stopped.
I had the honor of working with Stacy Peralta on Hawaiian: Legend of Eddie Aikau, a documentary about the legendary big wave surfer from the North Shore. Stacy saw my N-Men skateboard and we talked about Randy Katen and the N-Men. I told him they kind of raised me, taught me to skate, snowboard and surf. Stacy inspired me to tell the story of the N-Men from my perspective.
After eight years of filming, in May of 2018, I completed shooting and went into editing in hopes of submitting to the Sundance Film Festival for 2019.
